This site, comprising several protected areas, is situated predominantly along the Great Escarpment on Australia’s east coast. The outstanding geological features displayed around shield volcanic craters and the high number of rare and threatened rainforest species are of international significance for science and conservation.

Andrea writes: ¨The Tarkine Wilderness (I saw) is part of the Gondwana Rainforests. The Tarkine is in the north west of Tasmania, you´ll find it on a map, it has rainforest, streams, it extends to the coast too so lots of sand dunes a coastal habitat too. I´ve not been to this waterfall but it looks pretty special. Being a rainforest I reckon in full winter flood it would be spectacular.¨

This card shows mirtle trees in the Tarkine Rainforest

Andrea writes: ¨Hi Sandra! Another view of the Tarkine Rainforest for you. Myrtle trees are massive, funny pink coloured wood normally. Parts of the Tarkine are protected but there isn´t an actual National Park here yet. There is great mining potential in the area as well as logging so there is the never ending battle to strike that happy medium between development and conservation. It is also a stronghold of the last disease free Tasmanian Devils (facial tumour disease, a cancer transmitted when they bite / fight, so they have to be protected too)¨

More than 1,000 plant species are found within the park, attracting prolific birdlife.
